As seen on Weekend Sunrise Thirteen-year-old Sophia Rizzo, aka Glitter Girl, knows what little girls want and has used this knowledge to create a hugely successful eco-friendly glitter and accessory business turning over $350,000pa in just four years.
Since launching her online business with an initial investment of $2000, the Glitter Girl brand has blossomed into a multi-faceted business supplying loose eco glitter, vegan and cruelty free make-up and accessories to customers all around the world.
Rapid growth created further demand for a wholesale distribution arm with children’s boutiques requesting to stock the entire range, leading to Glitter Girl products now available in more than 100 stores across Australia and New Zealand.
With ‘Glitter Girl’ juggling the demands high school during the week and her growing business in her spare time, mum Megan Rizzo now works full-time in the business along with five part-time staff at their warehouse headquarters in Burleigh, Queensland.
“We had no idea Sophia’s ‘hobby’ of selling glitter had the potential to turn over $350,000 a year.
“Sophia would take the glitter pots to school and sell to friends until she was asked to stop as all the kids were wearing the glitter each day. When that market closed, she didn’t give up, she simply changed direction and asked us to help her create a website to put her products online.
“Within 24 hours we had sales coming in with the first online purchase from Tasmania.
“It just ramped up from there and since COVID sales have increased fivefold.
“Sophia has always said glitter makes everyone happy - seems this may be the case during COVID,” Ms Rizzo said.
Taking Glitter Girl’s phenomenal success to the next level, the teen-entrepreneur has her sights set on the fashion world launching a ‘Wearable Happiness’ clothing range.
Not satisfied with the bland mass market clothing options available to girls and tweens, Sophia rolled up her sleeves, working over two years turning her clothing range dreams into a reality.
Featuring 10 bespoke designs including sequinned jumpsuits, dresses, and t-shirts, Glitter Girl’s ‘Wearable Happiness’ collection will officially go on sale online at www.glittergirl.com.au on Monday 19 July 2021.
“I’ve always loved wearing beautiful, colourful and sparkly clothes which Mum had to make for me because the styles I liked simply weren’t available in store or were too fragile for everyday active wear and tear,” Sophia said.
“Everywhere I would go in my own homemade outfits, mums, aunties, nannas, and other girls would ask me where I bought my clothes, so I was aware there was growing demand for creative, comfortable and affordable girls’ fashion.
“It just made sense to share the joy and my designs as part of a new Glitter Girl clothing line - the ‘Wearable Happiness’ clothing range,” Sophia said.
Mum, Megan Rizzo added, “Every idea from the Glitter Girl brand to the sales platforms, the social media channels and content, promotions and packaging, and the creation of each and every product has come from Sophia, and the ‘Wearable Fashion’ range is no different”.
“We haven’t even officially launched the clothing range and we already have enquiries from adult women wanting to wear the range as well, so that’s another gap in the market,” she said.
Admitting the Glitter Girl journey from inception and launch to today has been a steep learning curve, Ms Rizzo’s advice to others is to surround yourself with people who can help in areas you’re not familiar with.
“We have learnt over this time that we can’t do everything ourselves and have sought the advice of experts such as web designers to upgrade payment systems and to manage the extra traffic load on the website, as well as social media marketers, and videographers, among others.
“It’s been a lot of hard work, but it has certainly paid off for Sophia who, at 13 years of age, has a significant amount of experience and knowledge about running a successful small business, so much so she’s been asked to do a presentation for her Business Studies class at high school,” Ms Rizzo finished.
